HSE enforcement - Skip Waste Operations

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

This month we are seeing several published reports from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), where they have made enforcement interventions surrounding Skip waste operations, in particular for legal safety breaches observed at yard transport and waste segregation operations.

The enforcement reports we have seen are highlighting problems with pedestrians and vehicles not being able to circulate in a safe manner. Such legal issues cause a breach of regulation 17 of The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

Our message is, if you operate a Skip hire or other waste business, you should now take this opportunity to ask yourself, when did I last review my yard transport health and safety risk assessment?

It is a fact that smaller businesses can overlook such important steps within health and safety, and so we are happy to report that we are able to assess your health and safety risks and provide you with a legally required documented risk assessment if you do not already have one.

It is worth remembering too, if health and safety standards are not met upon the HSE visiting your premises, the current Intervention fee charged by the HSE is £163 per hour, plus you will have the inconvenience of having an Improvement Notice, or even the more serious Prohibition Notice served upon your business. It's just not worth taking the risk.

If you need health and safety support, or just a friendly advisory chat with a consultant, don't delay, drop us a line at enquiries@chameleonsafetyservices.co.uk or please do give us a call on (01827) 488021. We are a friendly Tamworth, Staffordshire based but nationwide health and safety business, highly experienced with the requirements of HS&E regulators and we can and will provide day to day H&S support for your Skip or other waste operation.
